Who writes this
Evan Shoemaker. Parent, and the person who builds Five Lunches.
I built Five Lunches because I was packing the same five lunches every week and making the same decision badly every morning. The blog is the part of that I can't put in software: what to buy, what survives a backpack, and why the box keeps coming home full.
What I am not
I am not a dietitian, a nutritionist, or a doctor, and I have no credentials in any of those fields. That is worth saying at the top rather than burying, because plenty of sites in this space imply otherwise.
What I have is the ordinary kind of experience: a few thousand packed lunches, a kid with opinions, and a lot of time spent reading labels under warehouse lighting. That qualifies me to write about logistics: containers, timing, temperature, shopping, what gets eaten and what comes back. It does not qualify me to write about your child's nutrition.
So the blog stays in its lane
- What it covers: what to pack, what to buy and where, how to plan a week, what survives until noon, and why a lunch comes home untouched.
- What it won't do: tell you what your child should be eating, diagnose a feeding problem, or give you a number for calories, macros or growth.
- Allergens: covered as a shopping and label-reading problem, which is what it is in a supermarket. It is also a medical problem, and that half belongs to your allergist. Nothing here ever calls a food safe. That is the same rule the app runs on, for the same reason: I cannot read your package and cannot know what a brand changed last quarter.
- Where a number comes from: posts that quote figures list their sources at the bottom. If one doesn't, treat the number as a rough observation rather than a fact.
When experience isn't enough
Some posts get read by someone qualified before they go up. Those carry a Checked by line under the byline with a name and their credentials. A post without one has been checked by nobody but me.
If something here is wrong
Tell me and I'll fix it: hello@fivelunches.com. Corrections get made in the post, and the post gets an updated date so you can see it moved. Nothing gets quietly edited.
